In the first quarter of 2024, U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents found 1,503 firearms during security screenings at American airports. Most of the weapons (93%) were loaded.

The TSA considers any firearm to be “loaded” if it and its ammunition are accessible to the passenger—for example, if the gun and ammunition are in the same bag. TSA officers screened 191 million passengers in the first quarter of 2023 and 206 million in the first quarter of 2024.
According to the TSA, 7.9 firearms were found for every million air passengers in the first quarter of 2023, and 7.3 in 2024. The TSA did not say which airports had the most smuggled guns.
However, the agency previously identified the “top 10 airports for firearms detection” for 2023. These include three airports in Texas, three in Florida, one each in Arizona, Colorado, Georgia and Tennessee.
