Last year, US border authorities detained 41 alleged members of the feared Venezuelan mega-gang El Tren de Aragua when they were trying to enter the United States.

In a report initially published by the CNN en Español news network, the United States Customs and Border Protection Office included the criminal organization in the list of gangs that could represent a threat to the country’s public safety.

According to the report, the number of arrests of members of the Venezuelan group was only surpassed by members of organized crime groups such as Barrio 18, MS-13, the Paisas and the Sureños.

The report is published within the framework of press reports asserting that the organization is taking root on the border between Mexico and the United States, dedicating itself, among other criminal activities, to human trafficking.

“The Aragua Train was something that was detected last year and it was in this region that the identification of this gang was made,” declared Gloria Chávez, head of the Border Patrol of the McAllen sector, in a recent meeting with journalists.

From the other side of the border, Mexican media warn that the thousands of Venezuelans heading towards the border with the United States have become a lucrative business for the criminal organization, whose members have begun to forge alliances with local gangs
