Miami – At least eight people died and more than 40 were hospitalized this Tuesday after an accident involving a bus transporting agricultural workers in Marion County (Florida-USA), according to the state Highway Patrol.

About 53 immigrant workers were traveling on the bus on the main highway in that northern Florida county heading to Cannon Farms, which grows watermelons.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the accident occurred in the morning near Ocala, north of Tampa, when the bus collided sideways with a pickup truck.

The bus left the road, went through a fence and overturned, police said.

Images from the Fox channel show the bus overturned next to a wooden fence and trees.

The FHP confirmed the death of eight people and noted that about 40 more were taken to medical centers. Eight of the injured are in critical condition, including the driver of the truck.

Cannon Farms said in a Facebook post that it will be closed this Tuesday due to the accident.

“We will be closed today out of respect for the losses and injuries suffered early this morning in the accident,” the statement said.

The causes of the accident are under investigation.
