KPFK on the Move!

KPFK 90.7 FM Los Angeles has made a move from its long-time home in Studio City to a newly-built radio studio in Glendale. This is happening because the Pacifica Foundation, which holds the license and owned the building housing KPFK and the Pacifica Radio Archives, decided it was necessary to sell the property in order the pay off accumulated debt and aged payables (unpaid bills at KPFK and other Pacifica operation). Part of the sales agreement for the building will allow KPFK to move back to a smaller footprint after renovations are completed, rent-free for 10 years, along with the PRA’s offices.

The move required a tremendous effort by paid and unpaid staff at the station and Foundation. Moe Thomas, Pacifica’s chief engineer, with decades of broadcast experience, built the studios from scratch with assistance from local personnel and a number of dedicated volunteers, including Charlie Wilken, Ian Scott and Richard Dawson. Although a few kinks and idiosyncrasies of the new equipment are still being worked out and adjusted to by programmers and board operators accustomed to the old set-up, the move was carried out successfully under time pressure. The remainder of the move, include KPFK membership and business operations and the PRA offices, will be carried out over the course of this month, and completed after escrow closes at the end of April. That will provide the funding needed for movers and to pay off some nagging bills that have prevented the station and Foundation from doing the kind of “donor stewardship” that most non-profits do.

Meanwhile, the station will rely once again in April on asking listeners for support to cover the costs of the move, such as new antennas and gear, and the regular operations of the station, such as electricity to the transmitter on Mount Wilson, until funds become available with the close of escrow on the building. You can donate at any time to support free-speech, non-commercial educational community radio, committed to peace and justice, by going to https://kpfk.allyrafundraising.com/ and becoming a sustaining subscriber.

Later this year the Foundation will be holding elections for delegates of the listener and staff members at each of the five Pacifica stations, and donating at least $25 or volunteering three hours now will qualify you as a listener member of this unique and irreplaceable democratic media platform. In addition to providing uncensored coverage of the Israeli destruction in Gaza and the resistance to it globally, including among many US Jews, KPFK airs numerous environment-oriented programs, including “Be a Better Relative” and “Creative Frontline” that focus on Indigenous land and water protectors, Eco-Justice Radio from Socal 350, XR Now! from Extinction Rebellion LA, and California Solartopia, KPFK-produced news in English and Spanish, and vital voices from southern California’s diverse community struggles for equity, justice, sustainability and liberation.
