Last week Arctic Command received an emergency signal from a Garmin InReach emergency transmitter with the message: Polar bear.

Together with the Greenland Police, they started a search and rescue operation. Air Greenland’s rescue helicopter was deployed under the Arctic Command.

The distress signal originated from 35 kilometers west of Kangerlussuaq. Four people had seen a polar bear coming towards them. They could not seek shelter and had no weapons with them.

The four people were picked up by the rescue helicopter and flown to safety. No one was injured.
