200 largest companies of Ukraine in 2022
[10:05 April 15, 2023 ] [ Business Censor, April 14, 2023 ]
BusinessCensor publishes a rating of the 200 largest companies of Ukraine by revenue in 2022.
According to the financial statements of enterprises, in 2022 the combined income of the 200 largest companies of Ukraine amounted to UAH 3.9 trillion — UAH 385 billion less than in 2021.
According to the average exchange rate of the US dollar to the hryvnia in 2022, it is $123 billion, or almost two times less than last year’s acquisition of the South Korean corporation Samsung.
The dominance of state-owned enterprises is growing in the Ukrainian economy. In 2022, state-owned enterprises collectively received UAH 924 billion, or UAH 132 billion more than in 2021. Naturally, the increase in the share of state-owned enterprises in the TOP-200 can be explained by the rise in energy prices and the high level of inflation. Both factors were caused by the Russian Federation’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
After the state, oligarch Rinat Akhmetov traditionally remains the second largest owner of Ukraine’s largest enterprises.
Last year, his enterprises received UAH 685 billion in total turnover, but this is UAH 304 billion less than in 2021. The drop in income by almost a third is explained by the loss of two large metallurgical plants – “Azovstal” and MMK named after Ilyich in Mariupol and the blocking of ports, which are a key route for the export of steel and ore.
The full-scale war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine reduced the income of Ukrainian oligarchs by hundreds of billions of hryvnias. The irony is that most of them tolerated relations with the Russian Federation, secretly traded and, in general, were in principle not against “befriending” the aggressor country.
For example, the oligarch Dmytro Firtash’s company in 2022 was shortchanged by UAH 51 billion in revenue compared to 2021.
The total turnover of his companies last year was UAH 76.6 billion, which is UAH 5 billion less compared to the total revenue of Yuriy Kosyuk’s MHP companies, which were in the TOP-200.
Despite the record high gas prices last year, the income of Ukraine’s largest company – JSC “Naftogaz” practically did not change compared to 2021 and amounted to UAH 169.9 billion. Instead, the company changed its record profit of UAH 75.8 billion in 2021 to a record loss of UAH 59.2 billion in 2022. The main causes of losses are the subsidization of gas prices for the population and a high level of receivables.
The second largest company was “ATB-Market” LLC , a key company of the largest chain of supermarkets in Ukraine.
The company ended last year with a turnover of UAH 148.3 billion and a profit of UAH 2.8 billion. Compared to 2021, the network’s income decreased slightly, but due to the full-scale war, the profit decreased by UAH 5.5 billion.
The company is owned by Gennady Butkevich, Yevhen Yermakov and Viktor Karachun.
D.Trading LLC became the third largest company by turnover in 2022 with UAH 144 billion in revenue. This is not UAH 22 billion more than in 2021. At the same time, the company’s net profit increased by UAH 2.4 billion to UAH 6.22 billion.
The company is part of Rinat Akhmetov’s DTEK energy holding and sells coal, gas and electricity. Accordingly, the margin from trade operations accumulates on her accounts.
The operator of nuclear power plants of Ukraine – NAEK “Energoatom” took the fourth position with an income of UAH 134 billion. At the same time, the company’s loss amounted to UAH 3.3 billion.
The company, which produces more than 50% of electricity in Ukraine, suffered losses due to Russian shelling of energy facilities and loss of control over the largest nuclear power plant.
In the spring of last year, Russian troops occupied Zaporizhzhya NPP, the largest autonomous power plant in Europe, which operates with six units.
On the fifth and sixth rungs of the largest companies in Ukraine are Naftogaz’s subsidiaries, the gas sales company Naftogaz Trading LLC and the country’s largest gas production company, Ukrgazvydobuvannya.
At the same time, Naftogaz Trading LLC with an income of UAH 132 billion in 2022 received a loss of UAH 40 billion. At the same time, Ukrgazvydobuvannya, with an income of UAH 86 billion, received a profit of UAH 60.5 billion.
THE MOST PROFITABLE COMPANIES OF UKRAINE IN 2022
The most profitable company of Ukraine in 2022 became the largest gas production enterprise “Ukrgazvydobuvannya” from the group of JSC “Naftogaz”.
The company received UAH 60.2 billion in net profit. However, despite historically high gas prices, this is UAH 12 billion less than in 2021, because Ukrgazvydobuvannya gas is directed to the needs of the population at a discounted price.
However, performing an important social function, Ukrgazvydobuvannya still remains the most profitable company in Ukraine.
Three more state-owned companies were among the most profitable. Ukrhydroenergo, the operator of HPP and GAPP, became the third most profitable company in the country in the year of the full-scale war — the profit amounted to UAH 11.8 billion.
Oil pipeline operator Ukrtransnafta (part of Naftogaz) increased its net profit from UAH 160 million in 2021 to UAH 5 billion in 2022. The company earns from the transit of Russian oil.
On the other hand, the energy grid operator Ukrenergo increased its net profit from UAH 163 million to UAH 2.7 billion last year thanks to the sale of access to interstate power transmission crossings.
The companies of five oligarchs also made it to the “TOP most profitable in 2022”.
In particular, six enterprises of Rinat Akhmetov entered the rating at once. At the same time, one of them — the Naftogazvydobuvannya oil production company — immediately took second place with a net profit of UAH 18.8 billion (vs. UAH 11.7 billion in 2021).
Coking coal producer “SHU Pokrovske” from Metinvest received UAH 9.1 billion in profit (UAH 11.9 billion in 2021), and “D. Trading” — UAH 6.22 billion, or UAH 2.4 billion more than in 2021 year (trader from the DTEK group).
In total, six of Akhmetov’s enterprises, despite the full-scale war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, received UAH 41 billion in net profit.
Vitalia Antonova’s OKKO-Business Partner company increased its net profit more than ten times : from UAH 0.45 billion to UAH 5.6 billion. The company operates the OKKO gas station network and probably increased its profits due to the multifold increase in fuel prices, which was caused by the shortage.
Two GZK of Konstantin Zhevago – “Poltava GZK” and “Yeristivskyi GZK” – got into the “TOP most profitable” rating , which received 4.3 billion UAH (11.2 billion UAH in 2021) and 4 billion UAH (7.2 billion UAH in 2021) ) of profit, respectively.
The oligarch is a suspect in criminal proceedings for the embezzlement of $113 million of the funds of the “Finance and Credit” bank.
Petro Poroshenko’s “Roshen Corporation” increased its net profit by UAH 1 billion to UAH 3.92 billion.
At the same time, despite record high gas prices, the gas production company “Ukrnaftoburinnia” of Ihor Kolomoyskyi, Vitaly Khomutynnyk and Russian Pavel Fuchs reduced its net profit from UAH 5.65 billion in 2021 to UAH 3.77 billion in 2022 .
On the other hand, Viktor Pinchuk’s Interpipe Niko Tube, a pipe manufacturer, increased its profit several times — up to UAH 2.7 billion (UAH 0.74 billion in 2021).
Four Ukrainian technology companies were included in the “TOP most profitable” rating:
— Kyivstar telecommunications operator received UAH 9.6 billion in net profit (UAH 11.2 billion in 2021);
— the largest IT company EPAM Systems increased its profit from UAH 1.1 billion in 2021 to UAH 3.44 billion in 2022;
— payment system “Nova Poshta” – “NovaPay” increased profit from UAH 1.6 billion to UAH 2.36 billion in 2022;
— At the same time, “Nova Poshta” of Vyacheslav Klymov and Volodymyr Popereshnyuk reduced its profit from UAH 2.6 billion in 2021 to UAH 2.1 billion in 2022.

MOST LOSSFUL COMPANIES IN UKRAINE
Last year, the most unprofitable company in Ukraine was Naftogaz . The energy monopolist ended 2022 with a loss of almost UAH 60 billion. While the company ended 2021 with a profit of UAH 75.8 billion.
According to the head of the company, Oleksiy Chernyshov, the losses are related to significant accounts receivable, which arose as a result of the state’s use of the working capital of the NAC to meet the needs of consumers in terms of energy supply.
In particular, according to his data, the main receivables owed to the company have three components: the difference in tariffs (36 billion UAH), the debt of regional gas and gas products (76 billion UAH) and special obligations for 2022-2023 (158 billion UAH).
Naftogaz Trading and Naftogaz Ukrainy Gas Supply Company subsidiaries of NAK also ended 2022 with a loss: UAH 40.2 billion and UAH 23.4 billion, respectively.
According to the results of last year , the largest mining and metallurgical plant “Arcelormittal Kryvyi Rih” became the second most unprofitable company in Ukraine.
In the conditions of blocked sea ports, the enterprise, which was repeatedly exposed to Russian shelling, received 48.3 billion UAH in damage.
ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih is part of the international metallurgical group ArcelorMittal.
Agroholding “Nibulon” ended last year with a loss of UAH 10.5 billion. Instead, in 2021, the holding received UAH 1.2 billion in profit.
Before the full-scale invasion, “Nibulon” had 27 transshipment terminals and reception complexes, a storage capacity of 2.25 million tons and a fleet of 83 units. (including 23 tugboats), as well as Mykolaiv Shipyard.
In the summer of 2022, the owner of “Nibulon” Oleksiy Vadaturskyi and his wife were killed by Russian shelling. The corporation is managed by the son Andrii Vadaturskyi.
Ukrzaliznytsia , whose infrastructure suffered large-scale destruction in 2022, received a loss of UAH 9.1 billion.

RATING OF INDUSTRIES BY REVENUE OF TOP-200 COMPANIES
In the TOP of our economy are the following industries: energy, agro-industrial and mining and metallurgical complexes.
In particular, the enterprises of the energy complex from the TOP-200 received a total income of UAH 1.8 trillion. Compared to 2021, the total turnover of the largest energy companies increased by UAH 274 billion, which is due to the devaluation of the hryvnia, a sharp increase in energy prices, and 30% inflation.
The agro-industrial complex came in second place — enterprises of the agro-industrial complex and food industry from the TOP-200 last year received UAH 570 billion in revenue.
However, due to the full-scale invasion and blockade of sea routes, this is UAH 80 billion less than in 2021.
At the same time, the mining and metallurgical sector, which in previous years was the second largest branch of Ukraine’s economy, dropped to the third position with a total output of UAH 451 billion, which is UAH 501 billion less than in 2021.
In 2022, the metallurgical industry of Ukraine lost two large metallurgical plants – Mariupol “Azovstal” and MMK named after Ilyich, which were destroyed by Russian troops.
In addition, mining and processing plants lost access to the main export markets for iron ore raw materials due to the blocking of sea ports. As a result, the total revenue of GZK for the year decreased from UAH 326 billion in 2021 to UAH 151 billion in 2022.
At the same time, the retail trade asked for much less in terms of revenue, but this was achieved due to high inflation – in 2022, turnover decreased by UAH 7 billion – to UAH 455 billion.
The income of distribution companies decreased by UAH 23 billion — to UAH 247 billion.
The income of Ukrainian chemical industry companies decreased by UAH 50 billion to UAH 101 billion.
At the same time, the IT industry, on the contrary, grew in 2022. The total income of IT companies that made it to the TOP-200 grew by UAH 18 billion to UAH 106 billion.
The TOP-200 includes seven companies from the IT sector: three each of telecom operators and outsourcing companies, as well as a subsidiary of the American corporation Apple.
Last year, the IT industry entered the top three in terms of export volumes: the export of IT services grew by 6% and amounted to a record $7.3 billion.
