To that extent , the countries in Nato are arming themselves in light of the war in Ukraine.

This is shown by an estimate from NATO.

The statement comes a few weeks before the NATO countries are to gather for the annual summit, which this time is being held in Washington.

According to the report, 23 of the 32 NATO countries will in 2024 meet the target of spending two percent of gross domestic product (GNP) on defence.

This is a significant increase compared to ten years ago. Here, it was only three NATO countries that could live up to the then new objective.

Denmark is expected to spend 2.37 percent

The objective was set at the NATO summit in Wales in 2014.

According to the calculation from NATO, Denmark is expected to spend 2.37 percent of GDP on defense in 2024. This is an estimate made based on NATO’s requirements for what must be counted.

This means, among other things, that the countries must count purchases of equipment for Ukraine. Just as pensions for former employees in the defense can also be counted.

According to the report, Poland is the country that is expected to spend the largest share of GDP on defense this year with 4.21 percent, followed by Estonia with 3.43 and the United States with 3.38.

Spain at the bottom

At the bottom of the list, Spain spends 1.28 percent of GDP on defense.

Successive US presidents have time and again criticized Europe for spending too little on its own defence.

A number of European countries continue to occupy the bottom places. In addition to Spain, Italy, Portugal, Belgium, Slovenia and Luxembourg, among others, continue to fall short of the target.
