(AP) – In an accident with a presumably driverless Tesla car, two people died in the USA, according to a media report. The Wall Street Journal quoted a police spokesman in Harris County, Texas, on Sunday, saying that one of the men was in the passenger seat and the other in the back seat when the car turned off the road and against hit a tree. According to preliminary investigations, it was “almost 99.9 percent certain” that nobody was behind the wheel in the accident, said the police spokesman. The newspaper reported that it was still investigating whether the car’s driver assistance system had been switched on.

Tesla calls its driver assistance system autopilot. However, the company points out that the person in the driver’s seat must still have their hands on the steering wheel and be ready to take the wheel at all times. Although the functions would become more and more powerful over time, they currently do not make the vehicle autonomous.
