Mumbai. – A submarine of the Indian Navy recently refurbished, on Wednesday here sank after it exploded and rescue workers, including divers, have by early morning (SA time) even after the 18 crew members on board were sought.
The diesel-electric powered INS Sindhurakshak is less than a year ago by Russia returned to India after being refurbished.
The television channel NDTV broadcast footage of the explosion that ripped fleet’s shipyard here just after midnight.
“The cause of the explosion is not known. Our search for 18 crew members,” a navy spokesman told AFP.
The Indian Navy has ordered a board of inquiry into the incident.
The accident happened only a few days after India’s first domestically produced aircraft carrier launched and tests at sea with a domestically produced nuclear submarine.
