Dunford will oversee the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops, scheduled for the end of 2014. The nomination must still certify the U.S. Senate in order to replace General John Allen.
Allen took over command of the mission in Afghanistan in July 2011 and now Obama nominated him to the post of NATO Supreme Commander in Europe, said Reuters.
Nomination Dunford – Man “number two” U.S. Navy – for the mission in Afghanistan is largely expected. Dunford in 2003, served in Iraq, deputy commander of the Marine Corps from October 2010.
