Russia has threatened yesterday of “serious consequences” on bilateral relations between Washington and Moscow if Russian companies operating in Iran were affected by the new U.S. sanctions against Tehran.
“We assume that our companies that do not violate the restrictions imposed by the Security Council of the UN will not be affected by U.S. anti-Iranian laws,” said the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. “Otherwise, there would be serious consequences for Russian-American relations,” the source said. The previous restrictions on Russian companies in Iran were lifted in 2010, recalls the Russian diplomacy. Recently, the U.S. Senate had approved a series of new sanctions against Iran to force Tehran to suspend its uranium enrichment program. It authorizes the U.S. President Barack Obama to impose sanctions on any country or company that commercerait with Tehran to develop uranium resources or the country’s oil. Russia on Tuesday expressed its willingness to help Iran build a new nuclear reactor at the Bushehr plant built by Moscow and recently commissioned. Westerners believe that Iran’s nuclear program may have a “military dimension”. But Tehran continues to reaffirm that its nuclear activities are designed for purely civilian.
