A team consisting of 140 U.S. military members specializing in radiation control will soon visit Japan to assist the country in solving the nuclear emergency, Kyodo reported Thursday, citing Self-Defense Forces chief Gen. Ryoichi Oriki.

The Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant was crippled by the catastrophic March 11 earthquake and ensuing tsunami. The situation has not been contained as it is still leaking radioactive substances.

The Japanese authorities have been stepping up efforts to fix the stricken nuclear power plant.
